The United States is a hotspot for food trailers and trucks, and at ZZKNOWN, we export over 200 food trailers to the US each year. Our extensive experience in exporting food trailers has earned us the trust of numerous customers. Many American buyers are often unsure about the customs clearance process when purchasing ZZKNOWN food trailers. To assist all our US customers, we have compiled essential information on US port clearance procedures.

Customs Clearance for Food Trailers at US Seaports

Due to their large size, food trailers are typically shipped by sea. There are two primary shipping methods: DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) and CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight).

1. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)

For new importers, we recommend the DDP incoterm as it is the most convenient option. Under DDP, we handle all procedures, including:

  • International sea shipping

  • US local customs clearance

  • Payment of US taxes

  • US local logistics

Buyers only need to unload the trailers from the trucks upon arrival.

2. CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight)

If you choose CIF, you will be responsible for customs clearance, paying taxes, and picking up the trailer at the port. The process is as follows:

CIF Procedures:

  1. Prepare and Submit DOT (Department of Transportation) in Advance

    • DOT registration is essential for every trailer importer. ETO DEVICE obtained this certification in 2022 and is registered as a manufacturer under 49 CFR 566 and 49 CFR Part 551. Ensure your supplier is similarly registered. You can check our DOT information and request the format from ETO DEVICE.

  2. Send All Required Customs Clearance Documents

    • Submit the commercial invoice, packing list, and Bill of Lading (BL) to US customs in advance, before the ship's arrival.

  3. Pay Taxes and Fees

    • Pay all taxes, customs clearance fees, and any other expenses incurred at the port. The tax rate for food trailers is 25.4714% of the trailer's value, excluding shipping freight.

  4. Receive Goods Pickup Notice

    • Once the shipping company notifies you that the goods are ready for pickup, collect your trailer from the port.

Recommendations for CIF

If you opt for CIF incoterms, it is advisable to have your agent contact us in advance. We can provide them with the necessary paperwork, and they can verify if they can assist with the pickup. Note that the capabilities of agents can vary.
